Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office has released the Guidelines for the Use of English Public Signs in Guangzhou (2025), which specify, among other updates, that classic Cantonese dishes such as "char siu" will retain their established English renderings, while items like "wonton" will preserve their original phonetic spelling.
The guidelines provide systematic updates to translation standards for city road names, classic Cantonese cuisine, iconic attractions, and other public signage.
近日，广州市委外办正式发布《广州市公共场所英文标识译写规范》（2025 版）（以下简称《规范》），系统补充了广州城市道路、经典粤菜、特色景点等标识译写规范。
比如，经典粤菜叉烧保留其原译名“Char Siu”；而馄饨则保留其原拼写方式，译作“Wonton”。

The 2025 guidelines cover nine sectors, and classify public signs into several types. Compared with the 2022 version, the update aims to support Guangzhou's international exchanges, enhance signage clarity, and strengthen the city's global image and quality of foreign services.
据悉，《规范》聚焦九大重点领域，涵盖通则、市政交通、文旅娱乐、体育、教育、医疗卫生、餐饮住宿、商业金融、政务九大部分的公共标识；同时将标识划分为功能设施信息、警示警告信息、限令禁止信息、指示指令信息、说明提示信息等大类，分类清晰、覆盖全面。
为精准对接广州新形势下日益频繁的涉外交往需求，《规范》对2022版规范进行系统性升级，进一步优化城市语言环境，让公共标识指引更清晰易懂，全面提升广州国际化形象与涉外服务质效。
