Tired of hanfu being mistaken for hanbok or kimono? A group of dedicated advocates in the US took matters into their own hands. They created a comprehensive English book on hanfu. It covers everything from style evolution to detailed terminology, showcasing the true beauty of Chinese traditional clothing.

“有的人穿明朝的衣服，别人跟他说‘Annyeonghaseyo’（韩语的‘你好’）；看着我穿着汉服，跟我说‘Konnichiwa’（日语的‘你好’），”在美国生活的中国姑娘言洁予说，太熟悉这样的场景。

面对这些误解，律师、精算师、摄影师、全职妈妈……一群身份各异的海外“同袍”想要改变现状——他们决定合作出版一本图书，用英文介绍汉服。这本书系统梳理了中国历代汉服演变，从文物复原到专业术语翻译，每一个细节都历经打磨。

Yan Jieyu, who has lived abroad for 20 years, is the founder of Northern California Hanfu Association in the United States.

Yan noted that many Americans hold stereotypical perceptions of Chinese people and have even more limited understanding of traditional Chinese culture. As hanfu is one of the key embodiments of traditional Chinese culture, she believes publishing an English-language book on hanfu is essential to helping Americans gain a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture.

言洁予在海外生活20年，是美国北加州汉服社的发起人。

在接受《Z言Z语》栏目采访时，她表示，很多美国人对中国人的形象存在刻板印象，对中国传统文化的了解就更加有限。汉服是中华传统文化的重要载体之一，因此她认为，若想让美国人进一步了解中国文化，出版一本有关汉服的英文书势在必行。

“The members of our team are all hanfu enthusiasts with full-time jobs,” Yan said. Writing, research, making hairstyles and makeup, and even making hanfu by hand—achieving museum-level accuracy was an immense challenge for them.

“我们都是一些平时有正职工作的汉服爱好者，是业余的海外草根汉服社团。”言洁予坦言。写作、考证、妆造、甚至亲手制作汉服……对他们来说，尽可能还原到博物馆级别的准确度，难度超乎想象，她称之为经历了“九九八十一难”。

When Yan asked a blogger to borrow a bamboo vest to showcase the diversity of hanfu materials, he immediately bought a brand-new vest tailored to the model’s measurements and shipped it to them for free.

言洁予回忆说，为了在书中展示汉服材质的多样性，她向一位汉服博主借用一件竹衣，没想到对方竟根据模特体型买了全新竹衣，寄给他们免费使用。

During the interview, the words Yan mentioned most frequently were “gratitude” and “thankfulness”. She said she sincerely appreciates all the contributors, merchants, bloggers, and experts who lent their support.

在采访中，言洁予提到最多的两个词就是“感谢”和“感恩”。她说，她发自心底地感谢参与书籍制作的每一位，包括商家、博主、专家等等，“没想到有这么多人支持，非常感动”。

Jason Tse, a Chinese-American attorney, serves as the lead translator and editor of this English-language hanfu book. His challenge lies in striking a balance between academic rigor and readability: “We can’t really baby the audience as well, realizing that people are curious about this subject matter.”

来自美国旧金山湾区的美籍华裔律师谢诚文（Jason Tse）是这本书的首席翻译兼编辑，他面临的挑战是如何平衡学术性与可读性：“我们既不能把读者当小孩子糊弄，也要意识到人们对这个主题充满好奇”。

作为一名律师，他如何将职业思维应用到这本书的翻译中？

谢诚文表示：“作为一名律师，写作就是基本功。要始终记住读者是想看到整体框架的，所以细节得为这个大视角服务。”

I’ve seen across many social media platforms in the United States. There's actually a number of overseas friends, who are already interested in hanfu, in the sort of motifs and visual materials that make up hanfu over the years. I think it well exceeds what I've noticed 10 years ago.

最让谢诚文惊喜的是美国人对汉服兴趣的飞速增长。“我在美国很多社交平台都注意到，已有不少海外朋友开始对汉服的纹样和视觉元素感兴趣。这股热情远超十年前。”

“诸位安好，我是三槐明澈（王子澄）。”

一年前，《Z言Z语》栏目曾采访过中国“00后”汉服爱好者王子澄，他曾身穿汉服游历十余个国家，致力于在海外宣传中国传统文化。如今，他已结束伦敦大学学院文化遗产研究专业的学习，来到北京工作。

王子澄曾在很多海外博物馆内拍摄了关于中国文物的高清图，他也将部分图片提供给了言洁予。这些他拍摄的中国文物中，最令他印象深刻的是北魏元氏贵族女性的石棺，该文物目前收藏于美国堪萨斯的纳尔逊-阿特金斯艺术博物馆（The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art）。

“它上面有非常多的魏晋南北朝时候的服饰，可以用来作为服饰复原的参考。其中还刻画了我们安徽‘天仙配’的一个故事，来源就是董永和仙女结缘的故事。当时石棺细节图，非常地震撼我。当我分享（图片）的时候，还有人说第一次看到这么高清的石棺细节。”

他表示，想为海外博物馆中的中国文物拍摄更多高清照片，以便向公众呈现这些珍品的细节。

This is China’s hanfu. It is truly beautiful. My hope is that we can pass it on to future generations, allowing it to be preserved and cherished for a long, long time to come.

王子澄还想对所有汉服爱好者说：“这是中国的汉服，它真的很美啊！只希望我们能把它传递到更遥远的未来，让它长长久久地流传下去。”

这也正是这本汉服英文图书所有参与者的共同心愿。通过这本书，他们希望让世界上更多人了解、认识中国汉服。
