The South China Botanical Garden has sparked public debate after announcing an independent holiday camp that included a course on "egg collecting".

Although organizers clarified that the nests and eggs were not real, the course quickly drew controversy.

Supporters argued it offered children a rare chance to connect with nature and should not be overblown. Critics countered that, even as an "experience", it risked normalizing interference with wildlife habitats, carried potential legal risks, and sent the wrong ecological message.

By Monday, the garden had deleted the announcement. A staff member confirmed the course was canceled due to strong opposition, saying it had "educational meaning" but that new, more suitable activities would be introduced.

Nature educator Chunyu said the controversy underscored a gap in how institutions approach "nature education". Many programs, she argued, prioritize marketing over ecological responsibility and often recycle course designs without proper review.

She likened egg collecting to picking flowers both forms of interference with nature and said the debate shows society has yet to reach consensus on how to interact responsibly with the natural world. "Nature education still has a long way to go," she added.
